Shilajit – Silajeet – Mumio

Shilajit is commonly called shilajitu in Ayurveda. The wakhis call it “baad-a-ghee”(evils feces)”.

 

Shilajit is mentioned as a magical supplement in Ayurveda. According to Charak samhita, which is on the basis of Ayurveda, there is no disease in the world that cannot be cured by it. Charak samhita states that “All curable diseases in the universe can be effectively treated with silajeet when it is taken at the appropriate time, in combination with suitable drugs and by adopting the prescribed method”. Many people take it for health benefits such as boosting testosterone levels, strengthening of lungs and thereby aid the modern medicine in cure of breathing related disorders, strengthening bones and helping in conditions such as osteoporosis and also aiding in treatment of cognitive disorders. It is supposed to completely remove joint pains and is anti-ageing both mentally and physically. Many men eat it along with other prescribed methods to cure premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction and male infertility. It is reported that Shilajit contains at least 85 minerals in ionic form and other substances as a result of natural process.

 

Origins of Shilajit

 

Inhabitants of high mountainous regions in Himalayas call Salajeet, ‘Patthar ka paseena’’, literally, translated it means sweat of the rocks. And they are not wrong. Actually Shilajit is purely natural substance which is available only in difficult to reach high altitude Himalayan mountains. It oozes out of the cracks in rocks, only at certain times due to heat of the sun. It is also known as Silajit, Salajeet or Shilajeet. Shilajeet is produced by the slow and continued decomposition of rare plants by natural act of microorganisms over thousands of years. Exact period can vary depending on source.

 

A similar substance from the Caucasus Mountains and the Altai Mountains is called mumijo or moomiyo but it is a bit different from pure Himalayan Shilajit as research has shown that health benefits of Shilajeet vary depending upon where it is extracted.

Its colour can be from yellowish brown to pitch-black. Once cleaned of impurities and extracted, Shilajit is a homogeneous brown-black paste-like substance, with a glossy surface. It has a plastic-like behavior, at a temperature lower than 20°C/68°F it will solidify and will soften when warmed. It easily dissolves in water without leaving any residue, and it will soften when worked between the fingers. Purified Shilajit can have unlimited shelf life.

 

Genuine mumio/shilajit should melt at around 37°C and has a distinct smell of bitumen and bitter taste; on the other hand, ozokerite has a melting point of 164-169 °F/73.3-76.1 °C.
